Q & A with Sheri Long – Pilates For the Mature Client

by Anthony Lett

BASI Pilates Advanced Education Director, Anthony Lett interviewed BASI senior faculty member, Sheri Long to learn more about the Pilates For the Mature Client workshop. Read now!

ANTHONY: Thanks For joining us again Sheri! Pilates For the Mature Client is another terrific course I think, given that our population is ageing, and that there are so many retirees looking for ways to stay well and healthy.

SHERI: This is the largest growing population globally, they are living longer and want to stay active, It is my honor and since we will all be there one day I feel it is my responsibility to help them maintain a healthy, happy lifestyle

ANTHONY: First, (be diplomatic!), but how would you define the mature client?

SHERI: First they are the strongest population. If you can live to be 60, 70, 80, or even longer you are amazing and no matter what your physical being is it is never to late to start exercising.

ANTHONY: What are some of the special considerations a teacher needs to be aware of when teaching mature clients?

SHERI: I always treat my aging clients with respect, kindness, and compassion but never make them feel “old”

ANTHONY: Can you list some of the topics covered?

SHERI: In this workshop we talk about their needs such as, Maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system, strength training, mobility, balance and coordination, mindful stimulation, also some of the emotional and mental changes that occur as we age

ANTHONY: Do you look at various conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis?

Yes, we briefly talk about conditions that are common such as, Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, Disk conditions, spinal conditions, and C.O.P.D (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)

With all the needs for general well being and common conditions discussed I teach various exercises that would be appropriate and beneficial and safe

ANTHONY: How about the the impact of common medications like beta blockers, or I that a topic for a more medically based course?

SHERI: Since I am not a Medical physician I do not include this topic.

ANTHONY: What are some of the take home messages for student teachers?

SHERI: I wanted this workshop to include information, ideas, and exercises that would be practical for every Pilates teacher to teach.

It is my hope that when a student finishes this workshop they will feel confident, more qualified and even excited to teach this wonderful population that I so admire and respect!
